Duties:

As an EMT Basic your role is early response, patient assessment, emergency care, stabilization of the patient and safe, quick transport to hospital care. As an EMT Basic you can administer oxygen and certain drugs when directed by a physician.

Current classes:

SPCFPD is currently sponsoring an EMT Basic course. The instructor is Jane McCarty, a Paramedic with South Park Ambulance District in Fairplay.  She has 20 years experience as an EMT and also teaches CPR and IV therapy.

SPCFPD routinely schedules training to provide additional learning opportunities for members of the department based upon the needs of the department, we expect to schedule a course in IV therapy during 2006.

EMT Training Required:

Upon completion of the course and passing a written test, students will be certified and Colorado-licensed EMT-Basic.

Personal Equipment costs:

Personal equipment such as uniforms, flashlights, radios, and medical diagnostic equipment are furnished by the department or available in the ambulances.  EMT's earn $1 for each hour of training and $2 for each callout that can be redeemed at the end of the year for personal equipment.

Time Commitment:

Students can sign a contract to donate 500 hours of on-call time or remain active with the department for three years to pay for the cost of the class which is $750.  Students who agree to the commitment above get the class free. 

Other Costs:

 All students must purchase their own books for the EMT Basic class at a cost of about $100.00.
